What is a Cron?

The word cron comes from traditional Unix server scheduling: a way to run jobs automatically on a repeating timetable. On OpenCron, a Cron is more than a timer. It is an automated AI agent that runs on your behalf.

Each Cron wraps a prompt, an AI model, and a schedule (hourly, daily, or weekly). When it fires, OpenCron executes the agent, delivers the result to you (and optionally to subscribers), and accounts for cost and estimated CO₂ impact. Think of it as a personal research assistant that never forgets to show up.

How to Create a Cron

  1. Choose a model. Pick the AI model that fits the job. Lighter models cost less per run, while stronger models handle deeper research and longer answers.
  2. Write a prompt. Describe what the agent should do each time it runs. Clear, specific prompts produce better, more consistent results.
  3. Set a schedule. Choose Hourly, Daily, or Weekly, and save your Cron. OpenCron will execute it on carbon-aware infrastructure and surface results in your dashboard, history, and inbox.
